Community Impact reports that on April 23 commissioners in Montgomery County accepted a grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for $13.77 million. The funds are to finish a buyout of 29 homes in Montgomery County.
Following the aftermath of damage from Hurricane Ida, Montgomery County first applied for the funds in 2021. Late in 2023, the funding became available for approval. Earlier this year, the requirements to accept the funds were completed.
According to a discussion during a meeting on April 23rd, that if they requested one, the agreement stipulates homeowners must cover the local share of buyouts. The funding split at present includes a homeowner share of $782,790 and a federal share of $12.99 million.
The share for homeowners will be divided up between them relative to the buyout procedures and the price of demolition.
Executive Director of the county’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, Jason Millsaps says most of the buyouts are in precincts 3 and 4.
