The Courier of Montgomery County reports that Overland Property Group, a development company from Kansas, is going ahead with plans to repurpose Conroe’s old Sam Houston Elementary School into multi-family apartments.
On September 30th, the company will take ownership of Conroe ISD’s former school building. The City of Conroe most recently owned the building and had plans to make it into a performing arts center. The property, however, was sold to Overland earlier this year.
Back in 2024, Overland restored the old Montgomery County Hospital on First Street into Landmark 301, a senior-living apartment facility. It can now be found on the National Register of Historic Places.
According to Director of Development for Overland Property Group, April Engstrom, back in July the project was given $19.9 million in housing tax credits.
The new apartment facility will be named Landmark 601. There are 71 multi-family apartment units planned. They will have one apartment reserved for an “artist in residence” to live. The building has an auditorium that can seat 450 to 700 people. Engstrom said Overland will be working with supporters of Conroe’s arts community to offer performing arts opportunities.
Construction is planned to begin in early 2026.
