Community Impact reports that the signing of Senate Bill 569 into law by Governor Greg Abbott on May 6th means that Texas school districts like Conroe ISD will be able to continue their virtual schools.
A news release says that Senate Bill 569, approved in a 28 to 2 Senate vote followed by a 109 to 32 vote, applies to Texas virtual learning framework for the over 51,884 students currently enrolled statewide.
Enrollment in virtual schools, according to a news release from Senator Paul Bettencourt, is projected to double in Texas by 2028.
The bill offers:
–Existing virtual learning laws that are replaced with a clear structure.
–Students are allowed to enroll in as many as three individual virtual Advanced Placement courses, dual-credit courses or specialized electives that may not be available at their local school.
–Flexibilities for work-based learning students is provided.
–It let’s high school students obtain an associate degree.
–It stops forcing in-person teachers to teach virtual classes without training and also prevents school districts from requiring virtual enrollment .
–And, for virtual education providers, it creates standards and accountability measures.
