Community Impact reports that the Conroe City Council during their April 24th session, okayed the request for qualifications for design and build services for Conroe Fire Station Number 8. They have begun contract negotiations with SLI Group.
$4.2 million is slated for the project’s design and construction, according to Fire Chief Paul Sims. The sum does not include any fixtures or furniture. The complete cost should be about $5 million.
Councilmember Marsha Porter told Chief Sims during an April 23rd workshop that she appreciated his “diligence” on the matter. She said, “The fire station that was presented to us was several million more, so I appreciate you getting the price down to $4.3 [million] or close enough that’s going to make a big difference.”
According to officials, the location of the new station will be along FM 3083.
According to agenda documents, SLI was chosen out of two other companies.
Staff from the purchasing and fire departments were formed into a committee to assess the qualifications and score the request for quotes.
Conroe’s Assistant Director of Purchasing, Kristina Colville, said in a letter “SLI Group Inc. has a proven track record of design/build and construction of multiple government facilities with a mission to stay within budget.” She also said that from several agencies they had “good references”
The department in their negotiations will put together timelines before returning to the City Council for a final okay on any design and construction.
