The Courier of Montgomery County reports that a group of determined women in the Lake Conroe area in April of 1985 founded the Auxiliary of Assistance league of Houston. This was the forerunner of the Assistance League of Montgomery County which started with 41 members.
The organization began operating in a small 900 square foot building in downtown Conroe. They next expanded into an 8,000 square foot facility. The facility has a thrift shop and local headquarters with over 200 volunteers.
What sets the organization apart from others is their dedicated commitment to volunteerism. Members adhere to a minimal volunteer schedule.
Their thrift shop is their main source for revenue. It’s located at 126 North San Jacinto Street in Conroe. They take on donations of furniture, clothing and household items. Grants and monetary donations provide additional funding.
The organization concentrates on programs that help people overcome challenging situations, with programs that include:
–Operation School Bell which gives new school clothing, goods and home safety information to economically disadvantaged students in Montgomery County.
–An Assault Survivor Kit program that gives support to survivors of trauma and assault by making available “kits” of clothing, comfort items and toiletries for people in hospital emergency rooms.
–Scholarship programs for local high school seniors enrolling in Texas colleges, adults returning to education, those pursuing certification programs and people who face mental or physical challenges needing therapeutic programs.
–Community Partner Outreach which helps out disadvantaged residents of Montgomery County by taking care of basic needs.
–Fans for Friends which provides box fans in summer and blankets for winter economically disadvantaged residents.
–The Pass it On program which sends unused, unsold or excess items from their thrift shop to various community social service agencies for use by their clients.
–Tender Loving Care dolls which are handmade, huggable dolls for counselors to use to comfort children.
