The Courier of Montgomery County reports that a Founder’s Day event is being planned in Conroe to honor the birth month of Conroe’s namesake Isaac Conroe.
On February 11th at 4 PM, Isaac Conroe Founder’s Day will happen at his original homestead at 202 Avenue A. The site is now the City of Conroe Connection Transportation Services headquarters.
Descendants of Isaac Conroe will be in attendance along with elected officials. On hand will be period-costumed docents from the 19th century. There will also be a cannon firing.
He was born in Long Branch, New Jersey, and at the outbreak of the Civil War he was employed in the postal service in Chicago and there signed-up to become part of the 12th Illinois Calvary.
At the end of his service, he was honorably discharged in Houston. He became involved in the wood and freighting business between Lynchburg and Houston. He came to work for Judge William Henry Munger’s yard in Houston. Munger was his mentor. Conroe eventually put together a sawmill site that would evolve into the town of Conroe.
On Avenue A and First Street he eventually established a home. He lived to the age of 62.
