Here’s another story of how SHSU effects our community in a positive way. Early childhood education is vital to the well-being of all individuals.
Sam Houston State University Assistant Professor of Education Melissa Gatlin understands this, which is why she created her first-ever Academic Community Engagement course to help engage her early childhood students in a real-world setting.
Her students worked with Journey Home, an organization based in Montgomery County, Texas. They are a non-profit maternity home that provides safety and shelter for pregnant women experiencing homelessness, as well as toddlers and newborns. They also help educate the women on various topics ranging from prenatal care to child nutrition.
