The Courier of Montgomery County reports that this year the Crighton Theatre celebrates the 90th anniversary of its construction. The theatre is in need of new seats.
Back in 1934 Conroe Mayor Harry M. Crighton built the theatre. In 1979, a big renovation took place and the seating at present is still from that time.
Executive Director for the theatre Melody Montez said about “40,000 people a year sit in those seats.” She figures four or five seats have to be fixed each month.
On November 7th a fund raising gala is planned. It’s called “Take a Seat for the Crighton” and the campaign kickoff will be at Madera Estates.
Montez passed along that the theatre holds 520 seats, and those who attend the gala will get the first chance to choose a seat sponsorship. At a table at the gala, people will be able to buy individual tickets.
The lobby was expanded back in 2020 into the adjacent Muse Building. Additional restrooms were also added.
The board has selected for replacement a wood-backed seat with a red velvet-type material. The estimate for total seat replacement is around $280,000. Flooring would cost $100,000.
Plaques on the backs of the seats will recognize the seat purchaser. A seat on the lower floor will range from $2,500 to $500 for each seat in the balcony.
