The Courier of Montgomery County reports that in order to enhance safety and mobility, Conroe is looking to obtain over $50 million in state and federal funding in order to widen Airport Road and Foster Drive.
The two projects are being considered for Houston-Galveston Area Council funding, according to Goodman Corporation CEO Jim Webb. HGAC helps with area mobility projects with funding from federal and state sources.
Webb passed along that the two projects began development in 2017. He said the projects are seen as “excellent” when evaluated with HGAC’s criteria.
In an August 21st council workshop meeting, Webb said the end result will result in both roads widened to four lanes, added sidewalks and improvements to drainage.
Airport Road would be widened from North Porter Road to FM 3083. The cost would be $25 million. The road’s capacity has been exceeded because, according to Webb, this area of Conroe appears inviting for new residential and commercial development. One hundred crashes have been recorded on the road in the last 5 years.
The widening of Foster Drive would be from South Frazier Street to Porter Road. The cost would be $30 million. The area is expected to grow residentially, according to Webb. One-hundred-ninety-three crashes have occurred on the street in the past five years.
