The Courier of Montgomery County reports that Montgomery County’s new $10 million nonprofit Children’s Safe Harbor is now being built in Conroe. The purpose of the facility is to take care of the needs of children who have been abused.
With a planned location on Conroe’s Loop 336 East, the 45,000 square foot building is expected to open next fall.
Regarding Children’s Safe Harbor, the organization is a Children’s Advocacy Center that for well over two decades has served Montgomery county and surrounding counties providing healing, justice and hope for children who have been victims of physical and sexual abuse.
During a 25-year period the group has administered 26,500 forensic interviews. The organization, in 2023, reviewed 8,928 reports of child abuse in Montgomery, Walker and San Jacinto counties. Services have been provided to 2,302 children ages 2 through 17.
Sitting on two acres the facility will have two floors. The ground floor will include a garden, a conference and training center for community events, a law enforcement area and a medical clinic. Offering a naturally lit atmosphere, the top floor will provide a comfortable atmosphere for children and families to participate and receive counseling. There will also be a gym and staff dining area.
Woodforest Charitable Foundation, back in 2022, committed $2.5 million dollars toward the facility. State Representative Will Metcalf, last year, helped obtain $5 million in funds from the Department of Family and Protective Services to help build the project. Ten million dollars in donations have been given by community donors.
