The Courier of Montgomery County reports that several members of the community were in favor of four-day weekends for some holidays, which included Thanksgiving, in a survey that regarded Conroe ISD’s 2024-25 school calendar. Fewer instructional days were also wanted.
The results of the survey were presented to the board on November 14th by Assistant Superintendent for teaching and learning, Hedith Sauceda-Upshaw. Response to the survey totaled 17,525 people. CISD parents made up the largest group responding to the survey with 11,278 people. The responders also included 251 students.
Ms. Sauceda-Upshaw reported the most common request, that is 55%, wanted to start the school year August 14th or August 21st.
In the survey, 86% wanted to add five minutes to the school day. The calendar at present allows for 174 days of instruction. Including extra time to the calendar would yield 172 days of instruction.
Regarding such a change, Superintendent Null said, “Every school day is precious.” He said CISD teachers would have to endeavor to avoid a “falling off of student performance.”
Ms. Sauceda Upshaw said, of those who responded to the survey, 60% were in favor of four-day weekends for Thanksgiving, spring and winter breaks, as opposed to full weeks.
