The Courier of Montgomery County reports that in order to help emergency vehicles and improve the management of traffic, the Conroe City Council approved an agreement allowing Montgomery County to install technology at city traffic signals.
The interlocal agreement with the county was approved by the council in their Thursday meeting. Voting no were David Hairel and Kristin Hoisington
Access to the city’s traffic signals to install the system was allowed in their agreement.
According to Deputy Chief of Staff for Montgomery County Judge Mark Keough, Jason Smith, the design of the system allows emergency vehicles to get a green light at traffic signals. It can also be used to adjust signal timing.
Since 2024. Smith has been getting the project ready. The system was recently put out to bid by the county.
The system, designed to improve mobility and help emergency vehicles pass through intersections more safely, is a federally-funded Traffic Preemption System.
Licensing emergency vehicles to use the preemption feature would be the responsibility of the city.
