The Courier of Montgomery County reports that as students entered Willis High School Tuesday morning they walked through metal detectors. The previous day officials discovered a gun in a student’s backpack.
After officials on Monday received an anonymous tip that a student brought a gun to school, the campus was placed on temporary hold.
The fact that metal detectors would be set up Tuesday morning and that students’ backpacks would be searched as they entered the building was sent in an email to parents from the district.
According to the email, when students lined up to enter the building, they would be asked to put all items except their laptops in their backpacks.” Within the next few weeks, the district plans to change to clear backpacks.
Whether these actions would be permanent or if they could be expanded to more schools, Willis ISD officials have not disclosed.
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post Tuesday, the presence of law enforcement through all of Willis ISD’s campuses is expected to increase.
