The Courier of Montgomery County reports that ground will be broken for a new Conroe-based Hertha Metals $100 million plant to manufacture steel and high-purity iron. This will reduce the United States’ dependence on foreign supplies, according to company leaders.
The plant will be located near the company’s pilot facility at FM 3083. According to Hertha representatives, funding from Breakthrough Energy and Khosla Ventures, as well as a grant from the Department of Energy has raised around $20 million to date.
Laureen Meroueh founded Hertha in 2022 and since then it has developed a process to produce 99.95% pure iron, which is a level of purity insisted upon by major manufacturers of rare-earth magnets.
