The Courier of Montgomery County reports that Conroe High School memorabilia is being sought by high-school supporters Buddy and Swanette Smith for a new on-campus museum.
It’s been a years-long renovation project that will open with the new school year.
Items are being sought from the public to add to the collection by Buddy, who graduated from the school in 1967 and his wife Swanette, who is a retired teacher from the school with 54 years on campus.
According to Buddy, the exhibits can be found “in dedicated showcases along the main corridor inside the new northeast facing entrance.”
Showing the different styles, color and fabric through the years are letter jackets and sweaters. Going back to 1915 are different senior rings and yearbooks. Other things on display include newspapers, uniforms and pictures along with other significant items.
With the aid of the public and former students, they are looking to increase the collection.
Looking back at the school’s history, Conroe ISD harkens back to 1892. In the early 1900’s High School students of high-school age attended J.O.H. Bennette School. In 1926, David Crockett High School came long, followed by the present Conroe High School opening in 1964 on Texas 105.
About 10 years ago, Swanette asked the school superintendent Don Stockton along with the school board about having a permanent museum. They agreed.
No only have they received gifted items, she has used the 7,500 member Conroe alumni Facebook page and looked through thrift shops and Ebay for Conroe High School paraphernalia.
To donate items, contact Swanette by way of Facebook, text 512-964-2924 or email swanette@hotmail.com.
