The Courier of Montgomery County reports that there’s a mail scheme that Montgomery County officials are warning homeowners about. Through the scam, the homeowner is charged a fee for copies of documents that are available through the county clerk’s office at a much lesser cost.
The “offical-looking” solicitations are not affiliated with Montgomery County Clerk L. Btandon Steinmann, according to a news release last week.
Steinmann said “contact our office first” before you put out any money for a deed copy. He said “Deed copies are public records. You should never have to pay a private company $100 or more to get a copy of your own deed.”
The price for deed copies are $5 plus a cost of $1 per page.
Before making payment to anyone that offers property records by mail, a call should be made to Steimann’s office at 936-538-5932.
The Texas Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division is available for solicitation reports of these targeted schemes at texasattorneygeneral.gov or at 1-800-621-0508.
