The Courier of Montgomery County reports that a new partnership and project is underway for the rehabilitation of Lake Conroe’s Bird Island this spring.
In order to save the island where native and migratory birds roost, Lake Conroe residents Michael Hallett and Madi Bullock began an awareness campaign in 2024.
Now, for a new phase of the project, Bullock has partnered up with Sam Perrigue with Tx Dock Vibes.
Through the summer, they are collecting signatures on a petition to make repairs to the island by way of a grassroots community effort.
Off the Seven Coves and Harbour Town neighborhoods, Bird Island is a section of land that rises up from Lake Conroe giving a roosting place for water birds.
Although the 2024 effort brought the attention of the public to the issue, unfortunately the maintainers of the lake, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, said rehab would be a multi-million dollar project, and they didn’t have the funds.
According to Bullock, the island has shrunk from a size of two acres to about a fourth of an acre.
This spring a team effort is underway of Bullock with Perrigue, who is the owner of TxDock Vibes, a website that has listings related to Lake Conroe. They are sharing awareness about the project and working with lake businesses and approaching lake-related organizations.
On Tx Dock Vibes the two have a petition for people to sign to show their support of the project. Their goal is to collect 10,000 signatures by labor Day as an encouragement for SJRA to look over the work needed for the island.
Bullock said that in the past few weeks around 400 people had signed the petition.
Upon completion of the petition goal, they are planning on completing a plan for rehabilitation and estimated budget and submitting it to SJRA. According to Bullock, a free site survey has been offered by Lake Life Solutions to find out the estimated costs for dredging, rip rap installation, no wake zones and signage.
