Community Impact reports that how to pay for Conroe’s growing drainage needs is something officials looked at on September 10th. The City Council, however, did not move forward with a possible stormwater utility fee.
The council took a look at available funding from grants, work on drainage that’s ahead and approximately $210 million in identified drainage projects. It was not suggested by officials that the city pay for all of those projects at once.
Interested in grant opportunities, Mayor Pro Tem John Sellars wanted to know what existing grant possibilities would help pay for the drainage costs.
City staff continues to peruse available grants, but at this time property buyouts and home elevations are presently the only active drainage efforts funded by grants.
Accounting for less than the 10% of the approximately $210 million in identified projects under discussion September 10th, around $5 million in drainage work is included for fiscal year 2026-27.
Sellars wants to have more cost information prior to the council moving further on a proposal.
Due to the council’s failure to vote, the $4 proposed residential charge was not approved.
