A Walker County jury found Christian Chortanoff guilty of Aggravated Assault Against a Public Servant in the 12th District Court on November 13, 2025. Judge David Moorman then heard punishment evidence and sentenced Chortanoff to 50 years confinement in TDCJ.
On April 16, 2024, Deputy Gregg Burks and Sgt. Sidney Blair with the Walker County Sheriff’s Office responded to a domestic disturbance. After arriving on scene, they determined that no offense had been committed, but remained on scene to conduct a civil stand by while an individual gathered her belongings from inside Chortanoff’s home. Deputy Burks stayed outside while Sgt. Blair walked into the residence with Chortanoff to ensure the safety of all parties. At this time, Chortanoff became irate and went into his bedroom and turned his music up.
Sgt. Blair testified that as he was standing in the kitchen, he heard a loud crash and was hit with broken glass. Blair drew his weapon as he stepped around the corner and was confronted by Chortanoff who was swinging an aluminum baseball bat in his direction. Blair instructed Chortanoff to put the bat down, but he did not comply. A brief struggle ensued where Chortanoff was ultimately placed in custody and transported to the Walker County Jail.
